May I Mother is a series of paper collages that explore the various experiences surrounding new motherhood. The sacrifices, the worry, the pain and of course, the love. The mother experience is so common and universal, yet so complex and isolated. After birth, a woman's identity shifts–her very purpose changes from care of oneself to care of a new creature, one that she created yet seems to know nothing about. The line defining this new creature within herself to an entity of its own remains gray for quite some time. Once the physical release of the child is complete, a woman begins to create a new identity for herself–mother. This work illustrates my personal journey in discovering this new identity.
